Help the Bats

While White-Nose Syndrome currently has no known cure, we do know that it will be in Iowa. With WNS attacking our bats, it is even more important that we do not to do any further damage to Iowa’s bat population. If you do see a bat, best thing to do is leave it alone. Bats can climb and will find their way back to the roost on their own. Only if you see a bat exhibiting strange behaviors, should you take any action at all. Do NOT touch it. Contact your local DNR and let a professional check the bat for WNS.Most of us can agree that we don’t want to share our homes with a bat, but we still want them around to help control the pest. All the bats need an alternative place to roost. Bat boxes or bat house are a great option. Even small bat house can hold over 100 bats. Bat house are best place 10-12 feet off the ground in a place that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Make sure that they are not covered by tree limbs so that bats can easily find them using echolocation.
Iowa bats roost in a variety of habitats. It is important not to disturb habitats that may be used by bats. Old barns and dead trees make great summer roost for bats. If possible leave these habitats available for bats. Bats in a barn are going to enjoy being in the top of the loft and will not hurt people or animals that they share the barn with.Keep in mind: bats are intelligent and gentle creatures. They would prefer only to be left alone to eat the bugs we consider to be pest. Bats do no to harm humans or other animals. Yet, bats are very important to our ecosystem and our agricultural society. These important animals deserve to be treated with respect.
